NEWS! - X-Plane 12 second wave updates and releases

Laminar Research have already released b2 (Beta 2) of X-Plane12, and the dev notes are here,

Known Bugs
Incomplete or missing features in Alpha/Early Access:
        Master-external visual networking
        Water/land edges look terrible
        New XPLM APIs
    In progress features:
        Tuning lighting & fog
        LIT textures
        Performance
        VR holodeck lighting
XPD-11214 Plane Maker CG/Lights/Tanks Position Markers Not Visible.
XPD-12826 Joystick axis mapping symbols are missing.
XPD-12879 Wake turbulence broken for 3rd party integrations.

Bug Fixes
Beta 2

    Turned off in-app purchase temporarily.
XPD-12932 Demo mode pop up text says Seattle not Portland.

Beta 1

Rename of alpha 38 and Early Access launch.

I found b2 to be far more stable and better than the X-Plane12b1 initial release, weird as not much is noted in the Dev notes, but it is certainly more refined? So keep that installer close as Laminar Research do further initial refinements to the new simulator version.

I would be very interested in X-Plane 12 but I am very worried before taking the first step: Will airports, landscapes (like X-Europe or ORBX) and plugins purchased outside of Laminar be able to work with X-Plane 12 or will we have to wait months and months to find our updated files.

I don't want to leave a complete simulator to end up with a slightly prettier but totally basic simulator.

I spent years and a lot of money building my X-Plane, I don't want to have to start all over again and to have to pay a second time just to find what I already have today.

I made copies of all my custom sceneries, planes and plugins, is it enough ?

For the moment, asking for your lights, I will wait while still enjoying X-Plane 11.

I'm too anxious in front of so many unknowns.

Please explain us how to join X-Plane 12 without loosing everything.

XP12 doesn’t overwrite XP11 so provided you have enough disk space there is no reason you cannot have both. Then, leaving your XP11 unchanged and then add things to XP12 as they are updated or demonstrated to work. At some point you will decide that XP12 is good enough to replace your XP11 usage and then consider deleting the XP11 instance.

You are not going to lose everything. Equally some things are not going to be updated and will have issues in XP12.

One of the things that is surprising me is how much payware does seem to require changes. The aircraft packages I was expecting but scenery seems to be impacted as well. Boundless have posted an update on their site about known issues with their sceneries in XP12 which they are fixing. If they are representative, and many of their sceneries are pretty new, making the transition if you have a reasonable amount of payware is going to quite an involved process

This was initially a concern of mine as well, but the more I fly XP12 the more I wonder how many of these payware sceneries I would even want back, as in many areas XP12 looks (and performs) significantly better out of the box (lack of orthos aside). I think developers have a much bigger task than just making their products compatible with XP12 - they will also need bring the visual quality up to match the current bar set by XP12 (like SFD has more than done with SFO Definitive), in order to not be left behind.

SFO Definitive was interesting is that it demonstrated, at the very end of XP11,  exactly what could be done with pay ware scenery. It will be interesting seeing some examples of how the new standard XP12 airports look. Equally, given that in XP11 there was a lot of free content, one wonders what XP12 means for freeware development.
