Aircraft Review : CowanSim 500E by CowanSim
olderndirt replied to Stephen's topic in Helicopter Reviews
Another fair review. Spent several minutes in the right pilot position fighting the collective then it dawned -left side is where the action is, why have right side controls if they don't do anything important? I agree it could stand a bit more refinement but for $25 it's not a bad deal.- 5 replies

News! - Something BIG is here...
olderndirt replied to Stephen's topic in News! The latest developments in X-Plane
Did it take MSFS to bring this to fruition or am I imagining things. Definitely a 'wait and see' event. -
While Carenado my well be abandonware with Thranda no longer porting their stuff to XP, I feel X Plane sees little advantage in going head to head with '2020' right now. The initial fascination will fade as the gloss wears down and XP should be ready with a strategic strike (XP12 with NEW goodies) and all true believers will have their faith justified.

Aircraft Review : SA 341B and SA 342J Gazelle by JRXDesign
olderndirt replied to Stephen's topic in Helicopter Reviews
Another excellent review. As a lifetime fixed wing pilot, I've always viewed rotary wing flying with a degree of skepticism. The sim allows us to get our feet wet with rotaries and not generate too much alarm - this model shows that's it's not all 'a walk in the park' and you better do your homework to even get off the ground and that's when the fun really begins. -
Update Review : B 747-8 Inter Anniversary Edition v2.2.1 by SSG
olderndirt replied to Stephen's topic in Airliners Reviews
For me, as long as the galley's complete - for those long flights, who cares how fancy the passenger part looks. It's what's in the cockpit, how well it works and how it looks on the walk around that counts. -
Familiar ground. In January of 1974 I made the opening announcement "Kenai tower is now in operation". At the time I was on loan from Merrill tower in Anchorage and the new chief had been a supervisor at Merrill. It wasn't blue then and the airport was a lot less than it appears now. Here's me, spring of '74, in front of the new tower with my little Clipper.

Update Review : King Air 350 v1.4 by AirfoilLabs
olderndirt replied to Stephen's topic in General Aviation Aircraft Reviews
It's a tricky devil to install correctly - if you got it right first time, my congrats. Now if someone can make it work with 'Reshade' (opengl32.dll) or make 'Reshade' work with Vulkan I'd be tickled. -
Laminar Research : X-Plane and in the future the new world order
olderndirt replied to Stephen's topic in X-Plane11
Thanks to the God of simulators who advised Laminar not to go exclusive with Vulkan and retain OpenGL in parallel. Vulkan has arrived but it's not quite here yet.- 32 replies

News! : X-Plane goes 11.50 final
olderndirt replied to Stephen's topic in News! The latest developments in X-Plane
With all the betas I've been semi-dreading the final release which I just got from 'Steam'. So I clicked on 'Vulkan' and loaded up - imagine my surprise. Better rendering at wide open settings except zero reflections. Smooth as glass and probably more FPS but I'm locked at 30. So far so good.- 3 replies

Did Orbx actually develop their 'London landmark' scenery? It looks like a slightly adjusted version of the XP default.

Aircraft Review : Lockheed P-38L Lightning by Flying Iron
olderndirt replied to Stephen's topic in Classic Aircraft Reviews
Another class act for 'FlyingIron' - I didn't buy the Grob. The altimeter has no "Kollsman" window but should be corrected shortly. -
Aircraft Review : Cessna 150 Commuter by vFlyteAir
olderndirt replied to Stephen's topic in General Aviation Aircraft Reviews
Much as I appreciate the quality of VFlyte's aircraft, the need for another C150 in an already crowded market escapes me. A Cessna 140A, direct predecessor to the 150 , would have been nice. -
While I'm sure it's top quality based on owning their Mark IX but talk about diminshed expectations when they revealed this one. They were already in my warbirds niche and I expected something with 12 or 18 cylinders as their next offering. The still forthcoming F117 doesn't do much either - I think they're misdirected but hopefully will recover.
